December 5th, 2012

It’s time for another round of “wow look at that detail and also linguistics.”

Closeup size vs. print size.
I decided to do shading in the warlock’s wings using the text that also appears in his/her summoning circle.  The blended colours of moth wings are made by tiny scales, so I thought this would be a cute detail where a character replaces a scale.

This first poem was written by one of our head writers!  Unfortunately, when translated, none of the rhyme carries over.

o nemu no naq mi munya luu mi
zat mo naqe rai no navuraj yo,
ala’i uu iimeta sin mi iila teka ei
ano moj ei annaita xemin o qohiila.
-
Pilot of the storm who leaves no trace,
like thoughts inside a dream,
heed the path that led me to that place,
to be where I have been.

Then I just adapted anime songs for the rest of them.

tubeu o kuusla saa no miciotjuts mi soumuiqe,
matfugu mi axi ba agela, sola mi ala hilado ei.
-
Disobey the guidance of the all-consuming star
And run straight up towards the door in the sky.

siuug o utqe koibe et toula unmei yaet.
matao mo ka miuu yuuzan dekinai.
mauh o sannai motjau no luu mi
azila mo lutunai, olaion.
-
He was told that it is his fate to bear the relics and fight his closest friend.
But that is something he cannot yet comprehend.
He has no choice but to pretend that
he is a warrior who knows no fear, Orion.

saajai uu ma qaxin ba nani o suqe iilasuqa?
ano sukuu no tuzuqe sinmoj ni iilasuqa?
itumo no luu mi nikogao suqe tolelasuqa?
ma uu zeu sano o coiiqe tuzulasu.
-
Where are you, Saathlai, and what are you doing?
Are you in a place far away beyond the fire in the sky?
Will you please keep that smile on like you always did?
That is all I wish of you to do for me.

onmannyen et tuusennyen mae kou aiqeila.
botssennyen sugita tao kou
ka uu mot aisubeki ranta.
onoku et tuusennyen aj mo aiqeila.
mui a dita sano zei kou
moui no reizekai mi myu a kyezefenai.
-
I loved you for a thousand years and then two thousand more
After eight thousand years that I loved you,
you became even more dear in my heart
I will love you ten thousand years and a hundred million more
Since the day that my dear Mui died
every day every night, I hear his music in my living hell

Aaa, dou sunyou!?  (tansei! tansei!)
luq fulueqe supota a’i no ba.
a’i uu qiqa o mou seuli
no soko mi fuatuqenta. (tajqe tansei!)
-
Aaa, what’m I’ma do!?  (TC! TC!)
My arms is raised up highs.
Oops, I pushed someones
downs the stairs again. (Help me TC!)

saajai no yo’u uu sen bigato mi kyuusen mi sakuqe dei
sawadehi uu kuaohi jajatsu-orou mi ranqe made konai
-
May the emperor of star-metal’s reign persevere for a thousand, nine thousand generations
Until the pebbles of the stream grow into boulders lush with rust, and never may they decrease

And the perennial angsty anime favourite, which actually developed a sort of rhyme in translation:

tubeu aza mi kae, sakuqe tonfukaqe
tubeu aza mi kae, sakuqe tofugaqe
It all returns to nothing, it all comes tumbling down.
It all returns to nothing, I just keep letting me down.

Behind the scenes on writing detail

November 17th, 2012

You saw this last week:

But what about the writing involved?  What if there were some key to it?  And a key to what’s written on turbodrac?  Wonder no longer!

A CURSIVE writing system? How unusual! Numbers counted Greek style where a=1 b=2 etc.

Characters of mothlanguage based on a mesh of Chinese and Egyptian Hieratic.

Dungeon World and the Tapestry

November 16th, 2012

Hi, Andri the Ideas Guy here. Let me start off by saying Scobble you own, never stop.

Oh, and there’s projects! I’m announcing that there will be Nightfall Playbooks compatible with Dungeon World, which you should totally check out. They will likely be done mostly by me, as the writing team for the main book is busily working away on making sure everything is perfect. Warlocks and Vampires, Forgotten Ones and Lepidopterans, all compatible with Dungeon World! I know I’ll play nothing but a moth for months.

The other other thing I’m here to talk about is a project I call The Tapestry. To delve into Ad blurb mode for a second;

The Tapestry

It is a world of lost worlds, where the remnants of forgotten civilizations, extinct peoples and dying cultures are gathered and stitched into a cohesive fabric. For what purpose, no one knows; its inhabitants simply know it as the Tapestry.

The Tapestry is a collection of miniature settings for use in any hobby game, ready to be used with other Tapestry products to form its own setting or to be dropped into an ongoing game.

It is intended to be a collaborative, inclusive mini-setting creation project: Freelancers can write for it (assuming their content is approved, we will have standards!) and publish through a “Tapestry imprint”. The world of The Tapestry is a stitched patchwork of mutually contradictory physical laws, remnants of planets, crashed space ships, flying islands, underground tunnels and more dungeons than could be counted. Each product focuses on a “Patch”, which is a self-contained miniature setting added to the overall Tapestry by alien spider-gods known as the Weavers. The intent is that you could run a game of adventurers travelling between Patches on the Tapestry itself, or you can take individual products and plonk them down in your own setting with a minimum of fuss.

I’m excited about both projects, so expect more updates on both!

Class/Race Image Preview

November 11th, 2012

So much effort is put into the art that even the rulers use one of two different number systems, detail that probably won’t even be visible in the printed work. Meanwhile, some idea sketches for Forgotten Ones, Dolor Dances, Werewolves, and Warlocks. I can’t choose between snarling, or suffering ; and driven insane by that which should not be known, or driven even more insane such that one has merged with that knowledge. I’ll probably end up drawing both and only having one appear in the book because I like both designs.

Looking Forward

November 7th, 2012

Hey, it’s me, the actual Fun Tyrant, back to the blog after wrapping up the Kickstarter and getting some things in order.

This last week has been an enjoyable one at Fun Tyrant HQ, as I get contracts signed and budgets worked out. We’re looking forward, and in many ways, Nightfall is going to get taken off my plate for the next month to two months. It’s in the hands of Darren, Sam, and Mac until I get a manuscript. Oh, then the fun begins.

So, what should you expect from the Tyrant in the next two months? More Nightfall previews, guaranteed. In addition, we have a very special game (this winner of the first SA Traditional Games Design Contest) ready to be released as soon as Mac decides to put a store up. It’s dice-gamey dungeon crawling, and we’re really proud to bring it to you.

After that, Fun Tyrant is preparing to really blow your mind. Andri has been working on a project we’ve code-named “Expedition.” Expedition’s design process is rebuilding the idea of an RPG from the ground-up, as if Dungeons & Dragons, Vampire, or any of the others hadn’t existed. It’s not even really a roleplaying game; it’s an Adventure Game – that is, a game where you go on adventures with your friends. And there are no numbers.

We have a few other projects on the burner; I’m not quite ready to spill the beans on those yet. For now, stay tuned and remember:

Fun is mandatory, citizen.

Who likes process photos?  I bet you all do.  This is only part of the upcoming work you’ll see in Nightfall!

Curious about why I cross things out in pink?  It’s because pink is a very eye catching colour.  Curious why Mothceptor chides me?  Because Rodimoth would be no help, Driftmoth is busy being an anime, and Ultra Mothmus would remind me that I’m working nonstandard hours.  Hohoho, moth/transformers puns, none of which are canon for Nightfall because Nightfall doesn’t need trademark disputes and also it’s just pure silliness on the artist’s part.  Curious about that crossed out icon?  Well you’ll have to buy the actual book to see a finished piece, but here’s the rough pencil version.

Movvz & carrdz

November 2nd, 2012

First up, thanks to the kickstarter, y’all will be getting a Nightfall tarot card deck. I’ve done some work on the borders and a limited colour palette to mimic the limited palettes required by early card decks when each colour had to be printed on a separate plate.  Cards will print probably around either size below.  The card with art is art I did for myself a few months back and is only used to show the border overlay on art and be cheeky.  I’m hoping to make the deck compatible with tarot, playing cards, AND hanafuda/hwatu.

Now a lovely Story!
During the kickstarter, I went to a tumblr of moth fans to ask them to help fund Nightfall, which has moth people.  Here’s the original ad, geared toward moth lovers.

They came though BIG TIME, with an amazing surge in donations!  Here’s a thank you pic.

Now, this picture may prove that I’m insane, what with four moth people lovingly but work-safely entwined, but when it comes to the insidious creeping horror of Nightfall, I think that makes me qualified to be this system’s artist.   Not that I draw moths in my free time or anything (I do).

More finished pieces

October 22nd, 2012

I don’t know if either of these will make it to the final book, but I just felt like finishing them.
